Verification Services Crucial for Mission Critical Software

Studies performed on deposited software indicate that the majority of deposit materials are not complete and do not contain all the necessary items to support the technology the escrow relationship is designed to protect. Certainly, companies that license software are far more protected with escrow deposits than without, but for any number of reasons the escrowed materials are often simply not complete or not perfectly accurate. When mission critical technology is involved, deposit verification services are invaluable.

“An effective escrow deposit is more than merely source code. Additional key elements must be included to ensure for an effective, complete escrow deposit,” says Chris Smith, vice president of sales and marketing for Escrow Associates. “It is our responsibility to be proactive with our clients, and to inform them of potential risks with materials deposited in escrow. Ultimately, the end-user of the technology must determine its value to the overall operation of their company, but our staff will work directly with them to help determine an appropriate risk level. If there is any measurable risk present whatsoever, companies simply should not forego these testing procedures.”

Escrow Associates’ Deposit Analysis reviews all deposited materials for all required components to determine any preliminary reasons that the deposit materials may not be complete. Then, each component identified in the completed Escrow Deposit Questionnaire is cross-referenced and tested in the materials and the build documentation is evaluated for consistency. Finally, a thorough Deposit Analysis Report with recommendations is presented to the client.

During Deposit Compilation, Escrow Associates will validate the build instructions by following steps through the compile process, document any issues in an error log and troubleshoot any uncovered problems with the Developer. Executables are then issued to the end-user for acceptance testing and the end-user can be confident that the materials in escrow are sufficient and comprehensive.

“The majority of software deposits have serious shortfalls and we take tremendous pride in our staff’s technical ability to perform both Deposit Analysis and Deposit Compilation services,” says Smith. “We understand the critical nature of this information and treat it as such. Escrow Associates was built on this expertise and through it we have earned our clients’ trust.”
